What is GPS?

GPS “Global Positioning System” is basically an electronic information system which is initially created by the US military and began to be used by them in early 1972.

Though at the beginning it was unique and exclusive for military operations, but the fact is that from the 80s the government of the United States simply allowed civil societies to simply enjoy this system.

Basically, the GPS is a navigation system that is actually based on 24 satellites which are in orbit of the planet earth that sends information about the position of a person or object and weather conditions as well.

Where GPS is used?

Generally, the GPS “Global Positioning System” is used on ships, trucks, airplanes, cars, navigation devices, and smartphones. GPS is basically designed with the goal to help the users to know his/her exact position, information about the direction, walking or driving speed, approximate time of arrival and much more.

Now, to determine the position of an object or a person, the GPS simply calculates the value of longitude, in reference to the Greenwich Meridian, the value of latitude and, finally, the value of altitude. To locate a point, at least four satellites are essential and through triangulation, it simply calculates the position where it is located.

Currently, there are two types of satellite navigation systems, one is the American GPS and the other one is GLONASS which is controlled by the Russian Government. And apart from all these things the European Union has also tried to launch a satellite navigation system which is known as Galileo.
